The Dark Untold Story behind National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese military launched a surprise attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor, killing 2,403 American soldiers and civilians.

More than 1,100 people were injured in the attack, which also destroyed aircraft. and warships, according to the National Park Service.

The next day, Congress would declare war on Japan and lead the US around the Second World War. During a speech to a joint session of Congress, then-President Franklin Roosevelt called December 7, 1941 "a date that will live in shame."

Congress designated December 7 as National Pearl Harbor Memorial Day in 1994, and  commemorations are held annually in Hawaii and around the country.

American flags from coast to coast will fly at half-mast in honor of the anniversary. They loved those smart looking white Pearl Harbor Survivor hats that they wore when out in public.

His badge of honour. She didn't have to say a word as they walked down the street or sat together at a restaurant  for their monthly get-together. "Thank you," they kept hearing.

Thank you, People know that freedom is not free. Someone has to pay for this. These are the guys who made a big down payment 81 years ago today, on a date  President Franklin D. Roosevelt promised would live in shame - and he did.

We haven't forgotten and hopefully never will. As another President named Roosevelt said, "Walk gently and carry a big stick." These guys carried the stick. Early in the morning of December 7, 1941, our nation was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Naval Air Service at Pearl Harbor.
