Casemiro and Fernandes take Brazil and Portugal respectively to last 16 with their spectacular goals

This now extends Brazil’s unbeaten streak to an incredible 17 matches and also puts them firmly on the leaderboard of the group F as they already have 6 points from their two games

Brazil in their last match against Switzerland made sure that they are through to the next stage with a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal by Casemiro.

Brazil started without their star performer Neymar due to an ankle injury.

The first half concluded with both the teams fighting to net one but accomplishing a dull goalless 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Brazillian’s team pace saw tremendous fervour and it seemed that the five-time World champions have taken the lead when Vinicius Jr. scored one in the 65th minute. However, to the shock of the Brazillian fans in the stadium, the goal was soon overturned after VAR intervened with an off-side call.

Switzerland was weak in its attack which led Brazil to take the lead finally with Casemiro’s beautiful goal in the 83rd minute to take the Selcao on their second win in the tournament In as many matches.

Portugal vs Uruguay 2- 0

When it came to Ronaldo’s Portugal against Luiz Suarez’s and Edison Cavani’s Uruguay match, Bruno Fernandes’s name saw all the limelight.

The first half seemed like Portugal’s game but it did not see a single goal being scored in it.

A moment of brilliance came from Uruguay when in the 33rd minute Bentacur seamlessly made it through the former’s defence and tried to score but was stopped eventually by the Portuguese goalkeeper Dioga Costa.

A scare for Portugal came in the 41st minute when Nuno Mendes got injured and left the ground in tears.

The second half saw the first goal in the 54th min when Bruno Fernandes crossed one towards Ronaldo who hurled himself in the air to try to head it into the nets. The ball went into the net but it was later revealed that the Manchester United Striker had missed the header.

In the 75th minute, Uruguay seemed to have a leveller when the substitute hit one towards the goal post from the edge of the box only to find the ball hitting the post instead of going through the nets.

Just 3 minutes later, Suarez also missed a close-range shot which denied another equalizing chance for the Uruguayans.

In the extra time, an unfortunate touch from Giminez’s trailing hand awarded Portugal a penalty after confirming through the pitchside monitor. The shot was taken by the star of the day, Fernandes, who successfully dispatched the penalty.

Portugal now tops their Group H table with 6 points from 2 games and is through to the knockout stages of the world cup.
